Indian Muslims, USA, January 1, 2008

By NNN-KUNA

Brussels : The European Union has expressed its "deep concern" about the recent detention of members of what the EU described as "pro-democracy grouping in support of the Declaration of Damascus, in Syria."

An EU Presidency statement released on Sunday recalled Syrias international commitments, namely the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and urged the Syrian authorities to immediately release all those detained.

It also called on Syrian authorities to "ensure that all Human Rights Defenders in Syria are able to operate free of all restrictions and harassment.

" Portugal holds the current EU Presidency.
