* Israeli shell kills Hamas fighter in Gaza: Palestinians

AFP, January 1, 2008

GAZA CITY, Jan 1, 2008 (AFP) - Israeli shelling of a central Gaza stronghold of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, killed one fighter on Tuesday, Palestinian medics and witnesses said.

Three other Hamas militants were wounded in the artillery fire which killed Yehya Jaber, who also went by the name Abu Talha, in the Al-Bureij district, the sources said.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said the army fired "from the ground" at a group of men approaching a security fence on the border between Israel and Gaza confirmed hitting them.

The latest death brings to 6,014 the number of people killed since the start of the second Palestinian uprising in September 2000, the vast majority of them Palestinians, according to an AFP tally.

Israel launches frequent air and artillery attacks against the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip targeting militants suspected of being behind rocket or mortar fire against southern Israel.
