* Gaza blast kills Palestinian fighter

GAZA CITY, Dec 12, 2007 (AFP) - An explosion killed a Palestinian fighter from the armed group Islamic Jihad and wounded several others in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday, a medical official said.

The faction and a medical official said 20-year-old Samih Ayidi was killed by an Israeli shell fired towards Islamic Jihad members near Deir al-Balah.

An Israeli army spokesman said he was not aware of an attack and that blast could have been the result of old ordinance exploding.

Islamic Jihad, which earlier claimed to have fired 14 rockets into southern Israel, said the group of fighters was hit as it was firing mortar rounds towards Israeli positions.

A Palestinian, whom Israeli soldiers suspected was trying to infiltrate Israel from the Gaza Strip was shot and wounded, a Palestinian medical and an Israeli army spokesman said.

He was evacuated to hospital in the southern Israeli city of Beersheva.
